The bouncy castle<\/a>, known and loved by children and adults alike, is a staple at parties, fairs, and events worldwide. These inflatable structures provide hours of fun and entertainment, but have you ever wondered about the history behind them? How did these vibrant, air-filled playgrounds come to be? The origins of the bouncy castle can be traced back much earlier than the formation of Airquee over 30 years ago, to 1959 in fact, when John Scurlock<\/strong>, a mechanical engineer from Louisiana, USA, was experimenting with inflatable covers for tennis courts. Scurlock, who worked at NASA applying mathematical concepts to plastics, noticed that his employees had more fun bouncing around on the inflatable surface than using it as a cover. This sparked an idea that would eventually lead to the creation of the first inflatable amusement structure, which he called the \u201cSpace Walk<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Interestingly, the name \u201cSpace Walk\u201d was inspired by Scurlock’s connection with NASA, and this term is still used in some regions today as a synonym for bouncy castles. However, these early versions were quite different from what we know today\u2014they lacked walls or roofs, making them just bouncy bases for people to jump on.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Evolution and Innovation<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

As demand for inflatable structures increased, John Scurlock and his wife, Frances, founded the company Space Walks, which became the first business dedicated to the rental and sale of inflatable amusement structures. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the designs of these inflatables evolved significantly. The introduction of walls to the bouncy castles made them safer and more immersive, but it also led to some unexpected challenges. The enclosed space could become quite warm inside, making it uncomfortable for users. This issue was addressed in 1974 with the introduction of turrets and netting in the \u201cJupiter Jump,\u201d which allowed for better ventilation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
